Anyone who has fallen in love with climbing has likely experienced this moment: the moment in which you completely surprise yourself. You surpass your assumed threshold of ability—despite the gravity, lactic acid in your arms, and less-than-ideal friction on the rock—by making the split second decision to make one more move. Letting go would be so easy. But for some reason, at that exact moment in time, on that very go on your problem or route, you pull out a reserve of force and reach for something beyond. That something, the victory hold we find ourselves clenching, is the most priceless prize of all.
