We spend our lives in cities and in cars, with phones and computers ever-clouding our perception of the natural world: the pristine and ephemeral nature of the universe. Then, we unplug. We hike out, set up, and climb. But we see the rock as just another challenge: something to be fought and conquered. In truth, the challenge in that moment is not against the rock, but against ourselves: against the false selves created by the digital age and the disconnect. To climb is not to fight rock, but to fight the mask we have put on and become what we truly are.
