Climber Spotlight: Sean McColl

Despite maintaining his greatest presence in the competition scene through sport, bouldering, and speed events, Canadian climber, Sean McColl, has also marked a powerful territory of skill in the outdoor sport climbing and bouldering scene. Staking this role as an all around powerhouse climber, Sean takes our climber spotlight this week.

Having been a 5-time Junior World Champion who climbed 5.14 at the age of 12, his feats seem to spread across every arena in climbing. In 2009, Sean was the second person to send Dreamcatcher (5.14d) following Chris Sharma’s first ascent, after four years of unrepeated attempts by other climbers.

Watch Sean send Dreamcatcher:

Sean has been utterly beasting his way across the entire board of climbing this year–winning first place at the Psicobloc competition in Utah, first place in the season finale of NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior,” first at the Adidas Rockstars bouldering competition, and boasting a recent 5.14c redpoint of Tonnerre D’orage in France. Talk about an incredible year!

At 5 foot 6.5 inches, Sean clearly does not let a shorter stature deter him from crushing. To compensate, he says:

I focus on having a very tight core including abs, shoulders and compression. I try to know exactly what I’ll be trying to do and have lots of options to explore if my original method goes awry.
