Tommy Caldwell Climbs Europe’s Hardest Offwidth

Tommy Caldwell

As if Tommy Caldwell doesn’t have enough badass climbing accomplishments in his life, this week we’re featuring yet another. In this Flick Pick, watch as Tommy takes on Thai Boxing (6c/5.12d)—easily one of Europe’s hardest offwidth climbs located in Buet, near Chamonix, with a very likely sandbagged grading.

This climb has an interesting background. First established in traditional style by American offwidth master, Craig Leubben, the line was later bolted by French locals, which frustrated many within the climbing community. In 2010, Wideboyz, Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker, removed the bolts, returning it to its original form.

As a climber, you look up at that kind of thing, and think ‘oh that’s gonna hurt to climb that.’

Watch as Tommy musters up the courage, skill, and will-power to make it up this challenging route.
