Thirty Hours: Running 100 Miles at 72 Years Old

Today we slightly deviate from our climbing-centric Friday Flick Pick series to bring you something a little different, but evoking the same—if not more—passion and inspiration than the climbing videos we all love.

Thirty Hours follows the story of 72-year-old Wally Hesseltine as he attempts to complete the Western States 100; one of the world’s most prestigious ultramarathons, in under thirty hours. Having not started running until 37 years old, Wally’s story is a pleasant reminder that it’s never too late to get started and we can achieve amazing feats even into our later years. It’s a story of perspective and determination—inspiration to get out there and not settle.

I had the goal of doing one race or more per month. And as it’s turned out, I’ve done a race or more per month now for 35 years … never missing a month.
