Chris Sharma’s Deep Water Solo First Ascent at Pont d’Arc

Every once in a while we need to return to our roots and watch Chris Sharma crush steep limestone lines.

That’s why for this week’s Friday Flick Pick, we’re featuring his latest deep water solo first ascent of a climb that leads up Pont d’Arc—a massive natural arch found in southern France’s Gorge de l’Ardèche.

This new, unnamed 100-foot deep-water-solo route took Sharma four days of ground-up effort and was given a grade of 5.14a. In true Sharma fashion, he conceptualized and created this visionary line, by combining incredibly difficult movement on wildly aesthetic rock.

After 25 years of climbing … this is one of the most special first ascents I’ve ever done.
